Cutting Down on Wood Fiber Demand: Preserving Ancient Forests by Packing “4Good”

Though it may be a surprise to some, the commonly marketed “sustainability” of wood-based plastic alternatives is fundamentally deceptive. While wood fiber products may be biodegradable, their mass production requires lumber, which is sometimes unethically sourced from some of the oldest and most critical forests on our planet. As many as three billion trees are already cut down every year to meet the global demand for paper packaging, which has grown by more than 65% in the past 15-20 years.

As part of PFP’s ongoing push to create packaging solutions that benefit both the planet and sustainable business, we’re elated to announce our participation in CanopyPlanet’s not-for-profit Pack4Good initiative, a program committed to investing in supply chain solutions that promote responsible environmental and ethical manufacturing practices - specifically, our most priceless ancient and endangered forests.

PFP packaging products reduce the use of wood fibers, and thoroughly vet any lumber suppliers we may partner with to ensure the material has been sourced as ethically and locally as possible. Included in this vetting process is ensuring without a doubt that it was not taken from ancient or endangered forests.

As the topic draws growing concern from global retailers, brands, and manufacturers in the packaging, paper and cellulose fabrics space, PFP vows to “Pack4Good” by only collaborating with partners who are equally passionate about it and have definitive policies in place to reduce demand on these critical forested oases. We are continuing to scale our molded fiber process that reduces overall emissions, does not use harmful chemicals that cannot be recycled in a closed process, minimizes air and water pollution, and maximizes water-use efficiency.

The global demand for alternative, non-plastic packaging will only continue to rise in the years ahead, and we’re more than excited to be a part of satisfying that demand in an ethical and environmentally conscious manner.
